How to Apply Mascara: A Step-by-Step Guide
Good mascara application is mostly technique. This guide covers the steps that make the biggest difference, from curling to wand movement, and how to fix the usual mistakes.
Step by step
- Start with clean, dry lids. Oil on the lid breaks down mascara. Use an eyeshadow primer if you get smudging.
- Curl your lashes. Hold the curler at the base for a few seconds, then again at the middle and tips. Curl before mascara, never after.
- Wipe the wand. Pull the wand out of the tube without pumping and wipe the excess on the rim.
- Root first. Place the brush at the base of the upper lashes, wiggle side to side, then pull through to the tip.
- Corners. Turn the brush vertically and use the tip on the small inner and outer lashes.
- Second coat. Add a thin second coat while the first is still wet. Do not apply once dry.
- Lower lashes. Use the tip of the wand with light strokes.
- Separate. Comb through with a clean spoolie before it sets.
Common mistakes
- Pumping the wand pushes air in and dries the formula out.
- Clumps: too much product. Wipe the wand and use thin coats.
- Smudges: not dry before blinking, or oily lids.
- Drooping lashes: too heavy a formula for your lashes. Try a lengthening or lifting formula.

FAQ
Should I curl before or after mascara?
Always before. Curling after can pull lashes out and crack the mascara.
How many coats of mascara should I use?
Two thin coats applied while the first is still wet is usually enough. More coats cause clumps.
